Numerology reads meaning from the numbers in your birth date and name. It is a separate tradition from astrology with its own history, though the two are commonly used side by side in Indian practice, where each number is associated with a planet.

The numbers that matter most

Master numbers

Eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are usually left unreduced rather than collapsed to two, four and six. They are read as carrying the qualities of the reduced number at higher intensity and with more difficulty attached. Not every system keeps them, which is one reason two numerology readings of the same date can differ.

Chaldean and Pythagorean

The two dominant systems assign different values to letters. Pythagorean runs A to Z across one to nine in order and is the more common Western approach. Chaldean is older, assigns values by the sound of a letter rather than its alphabetical position, and never uses nine for a letter at all. The same name will often produce different numbers under each, so it is worth knowing which system a reading used before comparing it with another.

On name changes

Recommending a respelled name is one of the most common outputs of a paid numerology reading, and it deserves scepticism in proportion to how much it costs. If a variant appeals to you, there is nothing to stop you trying it informally long before any document is touched.

Frequently asked questions

How is the life path number calculated?

By reducing your full date of birth to a single digit — adding the digits of the day, month and year together and repeating until one digit remains. Eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are usually kept as master numbers rather than reduced.

What is the difference between Chaldean and Pythagorean numerology?

They assign different numbers to letters. Pythagorean runs A to Z across one to nine in order and is the more common Western system; Chaldean is older, assigns values by sound, and never uses nine for a letter. The same name can produce different numbers under each.

Does numerology have anything to do with astrology?

They are separate systems with separate histories, though both are used together in Indian practice, where numbers are commonly associated with planets — one with the Sun, two with the Moon, and so on. Your birth chart and your life path number are not calculations of the same thing.

Should I change the spelling of my name?

It is a common recommendation and worth treating with scepticism, particularly when it is being sold. If a name change appeals to you, it costs nothing to try informally before touching any documents.

What is a personal year number?

Your birth day and month added to the current year and reduced to a digit, describing a yearly cycle of one through nine. It is the part of numerology most similar to a transit reading in astrology.
